About Laser Treatment of Onychomycosis (Nail Fungus):

Treatment of toenail fungus with topical agents can be a lengthy process, and is not often successful.  Also, the oral medications used for treatment can have significant side effects.  The Nd:YAG laser can be used as an alternative to topical and oral treatment of onychomycosis.  The laser treatment causes local increase in temperature and destruction of the fungus.  It also leads to stimulation of the reparative process for the new nail.  The process for clearance of the fungus can take up to 3 months, but patients will notice progressive improvement in the health of the nail.  Most studies have shown that patients continue to have complete clearance of the fungus at the 12 month follow up as well.  All patients are eligible for this treatment; even if they have failed other treatment, or are poor candidates for traditional medical treatment.

During the treatment the nail is treated in a spiral pattern and three total passes over the nail are completed, with a 2 minute pause between each pass.  All nails with fungal disease are treated.

Number of treatments:

There are 4 total treatment sessions with one week between treatments.  If the nail fungus returns, then treatment can be repeated.

Appointment Time (may vary):

30 minutes for both feet.

Downtime:

None.  There is minimal discomfort during the procedure and patients can return to regular activity immediately after treatment.

Ideal Candidate:

Any patient with a fungal infection of the toenails.
