Sclerotherapy is the "gold standard" in treatment of superficial spider and varicose veins. The goal of sclerotherapy is to cause endothelial cell and vein wall damage in a controlled fashion. The result is removal of abnormal veins without damaging adjacent veins or tissue that are healthy.
In this procedure the problematic veins are injected with a sclerosing agent via a small needle. All problematic veins are treated in a stepwise manner. Patients will see results over weeks to on this as the body removes the vein.
Patients must wear compression stockings for a minimum of 3 days, but best results are seen when they are worn for 3 weeks.
Number of treatments:
While some small veins may resolve with one treatment, most require repeat treatment. Each area will not be retreated for a minimum of 4 weeks, but other areas can be treated in the interim. Generally each leg is treated separately and may need to be divided further, based on number of veins to treat and patient comfort.
Appointment Time (may vary):
Varies widely based on the number of veins that need to be treated. The time needed will be discussed in your consultation.
The patient should rest for the remainder of the day after the procedure. Patients should walk daily to decrease complications. They should avoid high-impact activity and weight lifting for 1 week.
Patients with noticeable and concerning varicose and spider veins of the lower extremities.
