Laser Hair Removal

About Laser Hair Removal:

During this procedure, laser light is absorbed by the melanin in the hair shaft, thereby leading to damage to the hair follicle itself through transfer of the energy to the follicular epithelium.  This leads to permanent hair reduction in the treated area.  We have the ability to use an Alexandrite or Nd: YAG laser, which allows us to treat all skin types.  Typically, the Nd:YAG laser is used on patients with a darker complexion, while the Alexandrite laser is used on patients with lighter skin.  The laser that is utilized will be selected during your initial consultation.  Tests spots are used to see the most effective, and highest, fluence (Joules/cm2) the patient’s skin can tolerate.  This leads to a higher percentage of hair loss in fewer treatments.

Because the laser relies on the melanin in the hair shaft to work, the patient can not pluck, wax, or have electrolysis to the treatment area for 6 weeks before treatment.  Also, because of the reliance on melanin, patients with blond, grey, and red hair are far less likely to obtain permanent hair reduction.

Number of treatments:

Patients generally need around 8 treatments, but some patients may require more treatments based on their skin type and the region being treated.  Sessions are scheduled 4-6 weeks apart, depending in the body region being treated.

Appointment Time (may vary):

Varies largely based on the areas being treated.  Time needed for treatment will be discussed in your consultation.

Downtime:

None.  Patients will have redness and warmth to the treatment area for 1-2 hours.  Patients should avoid direct sun exposure for 2 weeks after treatment.   Also, patients should not have had any prolonged sun exposure for the 4 weeks prior to treatment.

Ideal Candidate:

Patients who wish to remove hair from their face or body.  The GentleMax Pro allows for treatment of all skin types.
